HeadTeacher: Mrs. J. Hutchison

Dear Parent / Carer

Welcome to our April/May newsletter. We are working towards our end of term events and preparing children for their next class or for secondary. It is the time of year when teachers complete end of term reports for parents and many of the pupils are also sitting National Assessment papers in Reading, Writing and Maths. (Absences from school cause a problem here as some children do not achieve the level they should due to irregular attendance.)

We have been pleased to welcome a very large number of pre 5 children to our two induction days this month. They will make up 3 P1 classes in August.

School Uniform
As we come near the end of term, it is good to see pupils still following the school dress code and wearing their summer uniform. Please remember, the school would be very grateful for any uniform, underwear, socks, etc. your child has grown out of.

New uniforms for August are available from the school office.

We have taken photos of all the classes in the school and would like to offer these for sale to any interested parents.

Thanks for your support.

The Trout Eggs
On 3rd February Miss Burns and P6b got to keep trout eggs for 6 weeks. We learned lots about the life cycle of trout and we went to the Science Centre to learn a bit more information. A lovely lady named Jennifer gave us the eggs and told us how to take care of them.

On the first week we chose helpers for the fish. The classroom was noisy with all the pipes but we soon got used to it. There were a lot of things to remember like getting 3 ice-packs for the tank and keeping the temperature to 15. We also had to take dead eggs out with a turkey baster.

After having the fish for a few weeks, they started to change into eyed eggs. We all got used to having them in the class and the fish helpers got better at their job. A lot of fish died but even more stayed very healthy.

Within two weeks the eggs hatched into alveins. That’s baby fish! We found one with two heads!

They also changed colour, they were orange and now
they’re brown. Some people wrote fish reports that are up on the classroom wall.

On 10th March Miss Burns and P6b went to release the fish. We went to Knightswood Burn. The lovely lady Jennifer came too. We each got 3 fish in a bag and got to name them. I heard some fantastic names.

When it was time to release the fish, we all took turns to let them go. When we got back the class was really quiet. We all enjoyed having the fish!

The Golden Table
Knightswood Primary has started a new system. If your child has had good behaviour and attitude and is polite to the dinner ladies and if they get recommended then the next day they will be able to sit at the Golden Table and have special cutlery and plates, plus a friend with them.

I was the first P7 to get this opportunity and I would say it was worth trying for.

Scottish Country Dancing
On 26th March, P6b went to the Kelvin Hall to attend a Scottish Country Dancing Festival. It started off with the Strathclyde Police Pipe Band playing a tune. Then there were some speeches by important people of Glasgow, sadly the Lord Provost could not make it so he sent an assistant to make a speech. There were 39 schools participating in the festival. Knightswood were in the red group
while the yellow group danced first. We danced the Dhoon first then after that we danced the Lady Catherine Bruce’s Reel which we did successfully. We had a break when the RSCDS performed some complicated dances. After the break we danced the Dashing White Sergeant. The dancing teachers made three circles of people, one inner circle, one middle circle and one outer circle. It was really fun.

After that we had lunch for a while before we got back to the dancing. Then we danced the Round Reel of Eight a couple of times through. We were just about to dance The Old Man of Storr when disaster struck, everybody forgot their steps!!!!!!! After we
got over the shock of forgetting the dance we went
back down off the stands to dance the final dance, The Flying Scotsman. After that all of the schools got presented with certificates.

Attendance
Thank you for ensuring you contact the school when your child is absent. This has reduced the number of follow up phone calls the school has to make. If we are unaware of why your child is absent, we have
a duty to phone all contact numbers to try to establish a reason for absence. When you phone the school, please let us know when you expect your child to return. Please phone before 9.30am as this is when the teachers alert the office to any absences.
